My favorite Slavakian salad purveyor suckered me into buying a lottery ticket today. I heard on the radio that you have a better chance of being struck by lightning everyday for an entire week than to win, but what the heck. I thought maybe by buying a lotto ticket I would help my "Buy 200 salads, Get one free" campaign that I've been trying to sell her on for over a month now. If I win the $270 million, that argument will be a mute one. I'll build my own fantasy make-your-own-salad bar in my swanky UES condo. Take that, Salad Lady!

Or, maybe I'll buy a monster truck -- http://questforthemba.blogspot.com/2008/02/monster-jam.html

Chels, this is almost as embarrassing as the sombrero incident.

P.S. If you comment on this posting, I promise to share my $270 million lotto winnings with you.

And, a Dwight-Schrute-style closing...

If I'm the first to comment, does that mean I get the largest cut?? -B

Ok... I have to comment here.

disclaimer: I am 8 or 9 years removed from my Engineering Statistics class, but something doesn't feel right about the lightning vs. lotto odds claim.

1st: The lotto draw is a single event that has a very finite set of odds. Getting struck by lightning on the other hand, especially when compared to consecutive strikes over multiple days involves separate events and seems a little like apples and oranges.

2nd: I believe that that figures for people struck by lightning are compiled over a period of time (annually?) and then just divided by the number of people in the sample to get approximate the odds. Therefore, the odds for getting struck by lightning would technically be your odds of getting struck during a particular period of time (year?) and would be much more of a long shot on any particular day.... like say, the day that the lotto was being drawn.

My guess is that it is easier to win the lotto than get struck by lightning even once.

Just remember to keep that ticket dry when walking in the rain.
