Flat Stanley Takes Manhattan

Whitney and I had a roommate date on Sunday for some Indian food (yum) and a little culture (sorta).

The F-train was living up to its initial this weekend and we way overestimated how long it would take us to get into the City. A little dosa-drunk and with an hour to kill before the show, Whitney and I decided to fill the time making me the coolest second cousin on the planet. Mya, my cousin's daughter, has a class project called Flat Stanley. Here's how it works. Stan is a character from a book she's reading with her class. He arrived in the mail (well, via my parents) with the instructions to take him on an adventure and document it with a camera. So…

Flat Stanley rode the N train. He even gave a buck to the homeless guy playing "Freebird" on a flute:

Flat Stanley braved the Time Square crowds. Stan thinks that Spring Break tourists are the worst:

Flat Stanley ate a pretzel:

Flat Stanley even posed with the stars of Spamalot. Clay Aiken was having a bad hair day and refused to be in the photo:

An hour and lots of strange looks later, we headed to the theater. Now, we all remember Chelsea's post-London Wicked freak out. This is not that type of endorsement. The show was fiercely funny however. Some background – Avenue Q is a musical puppet show. Think, Sesame Street with nudity and cursing. It's a totally-irreverant-not-for-your-grandparents-two-hour-debauchery of a show. Here are a few of the songs that have been stuck in my head since:

What Do You Do With a B.A. in English?
It Sucks To Be Me (Whitney hums this song when I begin pouting about how much I owe the IRS this year!)
Everyone's a Little Bit Racist
The Internet is for Porn
I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today

I also have Biz Markie's "Just a Friend" stuck in my head, but that's another story for another day.

You are a very cool first and second cousin! I'm just glad he didn't get to do more than we did. I'm guessing I won't hear those songs on 92.9. Mom
